Shipherd vs Zendesk vs eDesk: which do you actually need?
Best for
Choose a helpdesk if…
Any business that needs somewhere for customer messages to arrive and be managed. eDesk is built around marketplace selling and handles Amazon and eBay messaging natively. Zendesk is broader, more configurable, and better suited to businesses with complex routing or non-ecommerce support alongside.
Add Shipherd if…
Multi-channel retailers who already run a helpdesk, whose agents spend most of their time gathering context rather than making decisions, and who are also losing money to unclaimed marketplace and carrier recovery.

Where Zendesk and eDesk are stronger
- They are the system of record for customer conversation.Shipherd does not replace that and does not want to — every ticket still lives in your helpdesk, with its history, its assignment and its audit trail.
- eDesk handles Amazon and eBay messaging natively, including the marketplace-specific response requirements. If you sell mainly through marketplaces and want one inbox, that is a real advantage over configuring Zendesk to do the same.
- Zendesk is far more configurable.Complex routing rules, multiple brands, non-ecommerce support alongside your retail operation — these are things a mature helpdesk does well and a focused execution layer does not attempt.
- Both have large app ecosystems and established integration partners. If your requirement is breadth of connection rather than depth of resolution, that matters.
- If you do not currently have a helpdesk, one of them is your starting point.Shipherd on its own is not a place for customer messages to arrive.
Where Shipherd is stronger
- Resolution rather than deflection.A helpdesk with AI can suggest a reply from a knowledge base; it cannot check whether this parcel, on this service, is actually late against the date you promised. That requires live carrier data on the specific order.
- Acting, not only answering.Telling a customer a refund will be processed and then queueing that work for a human has moved the effort rather than removed it.
- The recovery side, which neither helpdesk touches at all.Marketplace reimbursements, carrier claims and invoice reconciliation are not support functions, but they arise from the same failures that generate the tickets.
- No migration.Shipherd works inside Zendesk or eDesk as they are, so the evaluation does not require moving your support operation.
- We build it, not you.Helpdesk AI is sold as a licence and the configuration is your problem: your team writes the rules, maintains the knowledge base and keeps it current. Shipherd is a managed service. We build the policy graph for your operation from scratch, encoding how you actually decide things rather than how a generic template assumes you do, and we maintain it. The most common reason helpdesk AI underdelivers is not the technology, it is a licence sitting unused because nobody had time to configure it.
- Pricing does not punish having a support team.Helpdesks charge per agent seat, so every person you add costs more and every seat is priced whether that person is resolving tickets or not. Shipherd charges a platform fee that covers your whole team, with a large volume of resolutions included, and per resolution beyond that. You are paying for work completed rather than for chairs.
Questions
Is Shipherd a Zendesk alternative?
No. Zendesk is a helpdesk — it receives, queues and manages customer conversations. Shipherd runs inside a helpdesk and resolves the tickets in it. If you are choosing your first helpdesk, Shipherd is not a candidate. If you already have one, Shipherd works with it rather than against it.
Do I need to leave eDesk to use Shipherd?
No. Shipherd works inside eDesk and inside Zendesk. Tickets stay where they are, with their existing history and assignment. There is no migration and no parallel inbox for your team to check.
What is the difference between deflection and resolution?
Deflection means a ticket did not reach an agent. Resolution means the customer got what they needed. A bot answering "where is my order" with a tracking link has deflected; the customer had already looked at that link, and often writes again more annoyed. Checking the carrier scan against the promised date and telling them the parcel is two days late with a replacement on the way is resolution.
Can I use Zendesk AI and Shipherd together?
Yes, though they overlap on reply suggestion. The part that does not overlap is context: Shipherd gathers order, carrier, warehouse and policy data on the specific ticket, which is what a knowledge-base-driven suggestion cannot do. Most teams find the overlap resolves itself in use.
How does Shipherd pricing compare to per-seat helpdesk licensing?
Helpdesks charge per agent seat, so cost scales with headcount whether or not those agents are resolving tickets. Shipherd charges a platform fee covering the whole team, with a substantial number of resolutions included, and per resolution above that. Adding an agent costs nothing. The practical difference is that you are paying for resolved tickets rather than for licensed chairs.
Who configures it?
We do. Helpdesk AI is generally sold as a licence, leaving your team to write the rules, build the knowledge base and keep it current. Shipherd is a managed service: we build the policy graph for your operation from scratch and maintain it. This matters more than it sounds, because the usual reason helpdesk AI underperforms is an unconfigured licence rather than a limitation of the software.
Why does a support tool also do carrier claims?
Because they are the same failures seen from two sides. A parcel that arrives late is a claim you can file against the carrier and a ticket somebody has to answer. Handling one without the other means investigating the same event twice, in two different systems, for two different purposes.
